America: Continent or Country

America is a continent not a country

This post is due to October 12th, known as: Día de la Raza (Day of the Race), Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day), Columbus Day in the United States and Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

My main concern is how people use the name America to refer to a country and not the continent.... it's just wrong!!! Only with a simple mathematical concept of Group Theory, an element within a sub-group within a group, where sub-group is not equal to a group. For example: City - State - Country - Continent

Therefore, I consider myself: Maracaibian - Zullian - Venezuelan - American So, I am an American, but not a Gringo :-))

Finally, I think we have 2 options in order to move forward:
* Call the country of USA = Gringoland or something else
* Give the continent a new name

All comments/suggestions are welcome.

  • Estoy completamente deacuerdo contigo, hay que aclarar ese error que muchos suelen cometer.

  • Gringo is offensive. Even if it's no longer used intentionally to offend (ahem) people from the U.S., because of its root as an insult it can't be used as the name of either the people in the country, or of the country itself.

Se trata precisamente de hacer esa aclaración, yo soy mexicano y por lo tanto AMERICANO

(tanto como un francés es por lo tanto europeo)

  • rename the USA to Usonia. coined by James Duff Law and popularized by Frank Lloyd Wright.
